Four80East defies all of that anyway and they haven't disappointed me yet. This is one of the few recordings I have ever listened to in which I like every cut. and I have loved them ever since.
There are no two songs on this disc that sound alike. I am sucker for great melody and they have it mastered. There are two or three songs that have familiar elements in them, but they all have their own unique flavor.
"Nocturnal"was my first Four80East c.d. En Route continues that tradition. I am a proud Four80East fan and am glad to have this one in my collection.
I don't approach my music purchases with the idea that the artist should be playing solely jazz, funk or whatever other genre of music. The thing I love most about this band is that they are so inventive and don't rely too much on a formula.
Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprise listening to En Route. To paraphrase the original Funkmaster himself, George Clinton, "if you like a little Doobie in your Funk" give this CD a try. This is my first Four80East CD, but it definitely won't be my last. This album is definitely a toe-tappin', head-noddin', and in some cases, a rump-shakin' joint. So far my favorite track, 51 Division, is sizzlin'. If you've read some of my other reviews, I've gotten somewhat bore of Smooth Jazz, well, it's probably more Smooth Jazz radio than anything else. So I wasn't expecting too much when I purchase this CD.
It's an otherwise decent composition with with some annoying "twilight zone" music chiming in over it. After listening to samples, I thought I'd take a gamble on a group I'd never really listened to before. I'll check out more of 480east. The rest are great, indeed for a road trip of just chillin. If you're into a more modern, groovy-smooth kind of jazz; this is what you want. I must say, I don't love the first track.
You will not be disappointed these guys are awesome. I have all of their albums and this one sucks compared to the other albums. Do not hesitate to buy any of the previous albums.
Easily one of our favorites CD's to listen to.A must have for all jazz enthusiasts.
